Obesity Blackspot Gets Healthy 5-a-Day Food Box

Westnew Launches Healthy Eating Initiative

27-10-2009

A new healthy eating pilot scheme has brought some much needed early festive cheer to a host of North East tenants in Easington Colliery, County Durham, as North East property company Westnew Management Limited launches its Eat Right Campaign.

The campaign is aimed at encouraging healthier eating and well-being amongst tenants in the former coal mining town, once dubbed one of England’s obesity blackspots.

The Eat Right Campaign comes in the form of a weekly food box that contains fresh fruit, vegetables and meat; and goes a long way to helping the residents achieve their 5-A-DAY fruit and vegetables recommended by the Government (a complete vegetarian option is also available).

Westnew Management believes that healthier tenants will benefit the local community, especially young people, as they are the mums, dads and workforces of the future.

The nutritional food boxes will initially be rolled out to over twenty-five households across Easington Colliery, with tenants ranging from young families through to the elderly.  If the scheme proves successful Westnew Management looks to deliver it to every one of its 93 properties.

The local food produce is being purchased from and distributed by a fledgling County Durham-based company called The Cabbage Patch run by entrepreneur Barbara Chrisp – showing Westnew Management’s serious commitment to keeping the campaign within the immediate community and encouraging the local workforce.

Easington tenant Donna Pinder (pictured right) has an extra special reason for putting the new food box scheme to good use, as she is five and a half months pregnant and healthy eating is high up on her list of priorities.

“Eating good hearty food around the dining table seems to be a thing of the past for most families these days, but I think the Eat Right Campaign will help to bring these values back; as people will take time to eat the meals, especially if they know how much effort has gone into the preparation.”
